For most people, implant surgery itself does not hurt. The area is numbed first, so you feel pressure and some vibration, not sharp pain. Afterwards the gum is sore and a little swollen for a few days, and that eases steadily. Most people feel like themselves again within about a week.

This post covers what the surgery feels like and how the first week goes. If you want the full timeline in months, from scan to final crown, read how long dental implants take.

The short answer

You should not feel pain during the surgery, and the soreness after it is usually mild and short.

Cleveland Clinic puts it simply: you should not feel pain during implant surgery, and slight discomfort and swelling afterwards are normal (Cleveland Clinic, dental implants). The first round of healing takes about a week.

What changes the recovery most is how much work is done on the day. A single implant in good bone is a short visit. A bone graft or several implants at once mean a few more tender days. A 3D scan before surgery shows which one you are, so you know before you book.

What happens on the day, step by step

The visit is calmer than most people expect, and you know each step before it starts.

  1. Numbing. The doctor numbs the area with a local anaesthetic, the same kind used for a filling. You stay awake and can talk.
  2. Opening the gum. A small opening is made in the gum over the spot where the tooth used to be.
  3. Placing the implant. A narrow space is prepared in the bone and the implant is placed. This is where you feel pressure and a buzzing sound, but no sharp pain.
  4. Closing up. The gum is closed with a few stitches. Many stitches dissolve on their own.
  5. Going home. You get written aftercare advice. The numbness wears off over the next few hours.

If you feel nervous about dental work, say so at the consultation. Mayo Clinic lists sedation as an option that helps you feel calm (Mayo Clinic, dental implant surgery). If you have sedation, bring someone to take you home and rest for the rest of the day.

The first week, day by day

Most soreness comes in the first two or three days and then fades a little each day.

WhenWhat most people feelWhat helps
Day of surgeryNumb for a few hours, then a dull ache as it wears off. A little oozing of blood is normalRest, a cold pack on the cheek, take pain relief before the numbness goes
Days 1 to 3Gum and cheek may be swollen. Some people see a small bruise. Chewing on that side feels tenderSoft, lukewarm food. Chew on the other side. Sleep with your head a little raised
Days 4 to 7Swelling goes down and soreness eases. Most people are back to their normal routineGentle salt water rinses if the doctor advises. Keep brushing the other teeth as usual
Weeks 2 to 12Nothing much to feel. Under the gum, bone is growing onto the implantNormal eating, avoiding very hard food on that side. Attend your review
Crown dayUsually no surgery and no numbing needed, just fitting the toothEnjoy chewing on that side again

Mayo Clinic lists the usual after effects as swelling of the gums and face, bruising, pain at the implant site and minor bleeding, with soft food while the site heals (Mayo Clinic). Cleveland Clinic says the bone takes three to nine months to join the implant, depending on how quickly your body heals (Cleveland Clinic).

Six things that make recovery easier

A few simple habits in the first week make the biggest difference to comfort.

  • Take pain relief as advised, on time. A 2021 review of 11 trials found that patients given pain relief after implant surgery did better than those given a placebo (Melini et al., Frontiers in Pharmacology). Your doctor tells you which tablet suits you.
  • Use a cold pack on the first day. Hold it on the cheek for short spells. It keeps swelling down.
  • Eat soft food. Curd rice, idli, khichdi, dal, soup that is not too hot. Chew on the other side.
  • Keep the area clean, gently. Follow the rinse advice you are given.
  • Do not smoke. Cleveland Clinic notes smoking can disrupt healing (Cleveland Clinic).
  • Rest on day one. Skip the gym for a couple of days.

When to call us

Call the clinic if things are getting worse after the third day instead of better.

Mayo Clinic gives the same advice: if swelling, soreness or any other problem gets worse in the days after surgery, contact your surgeon (Mayo Clinic). Also call us if bleeding does not settle when you press gently on a clean gauze, if you have a fever, or if the implant feels loose. Most calls are sorted with advice or a quick check.

Implant vs tooth extraction: how they compare

Both are done under local anaesthetic, and the aftercare is much the same.

With an extraction, the tooth comes out and the socket heals. With an implant, the gum is opened and a small post goes into healed bone. For a single implant in good bone, the soreness afterwards is often in the same range as a routine extraction. A graft, a sinus lift or several implants on one day add more work, so plan for a few more tender days.

Missing the tooth for years? What the scan tells you

An implant is often still possible years after a tooth was removed, and the scan shows exactly how much bone is there.

Once a tooth is gone, the bone there can slowly thin. If it is thin, a graft rebuilds it first or on the same day. Our post on not having enough bone for an implant explains the options, and you can read about bone grafting in Kondapur and Vizag.

What it costs, and what can change your recovery

The written plan lists the implant, the crown and any graft, each with its price, so the recovery and the cost are both clear upfront.

Your situationWhat it usually means for recoveryPrice at both branches
Single implant, good boneShortest. Most people are back to routine within daysFrom ₹25,000 for the implant, ₹35,000 to ₹88,000 with the crown
Implant with a bone graftA few more tender days. Healing time before the crown may be longerGraft ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 by type, added to the implant
Full arch (All-on-4)More swelling for the first days, and you leave with fixed teethFrom ₹2,50,000 per arch

Planning around work or a trip home? Most people take the surgery day off. A long weekend or a festival break gives you a quiet few days to heal. If you live abroad, the implant can be placed on one trip and the crown fitted on the next.

How we plan it to keep the day simple

Good planning is what keeps implant day short and the week after easy.

Implants at our clinics are planned by Dr. Rajesh Kumar Y, MDS Orthodontics, Facial Orthopedist and Fellow of Implantology (Germany). Each plan starts with a 3D scan that shows the bone and the nerve. The doctor picks the implant size and position for your bone before the day.

At Kondapur, Dr. Varsha Reddy sees many patients for reviews and cleaning after the implant. Once your implant is in, our guide to how long dental implants last explains how to keep it healthy for decades. You can also see examples of our work on the clinical cases page. What happens at your ₹500 consultation

For ₹500 you get an iTero 3D scan and a written plan with the exact total before anything starts.

The scan takes a few minutes and needs no moulds. If an X-ray is needed, it costs ₹200 to ₹500. Ask anything about the day itself, including sedation and time off work.

Your written plan names the implant system, the crown and whether a graft is needed, with each price listed. You take it home and decide in your own time. Book your visit on WhatsApp whenever you are ready.

Is dental implant surgery painful?

Most people feel pressure and vibration during the surgery, not pain, because the area is numbed first. Afterwards the gum is sore and a little swollen for a few days. Pain relief tablets taken as advised usually keep it comfortable, and most people feel like themselves within about a week.

How many days does the pain last after an implant?

For a single implant, soreness is usually most noticeable in the first two or three days and then fades. By the end of the first week most people are back to normal. A bone graft or several implants can add a few more tender days. Call the clinic if it gets worse after day three instead of better.

Is getting an implant worse than having a tooth pulled?

For a single implant in good bone, the soreness afterwards is often in the same range as a routine extraction. Both are done under local anaesthetic and the aftercare is much the same. More work on the day, such as a graft or several implants, means a few more tender days.

Can I go to work the next day after implant surgery?

Many people with a single implant and a desk job go back within a day or two. Take the surgery day itself off. If you have sedation, rest for the rest of the day. With a graft, several implants or a physical job, plan a few more days.

My tooth was removed years ago. Can I still get an implant?

Often, yes. The bone can thin after a tooth is lost, so a 3D scan checks how much is left. If it is thin, a bone graft rebuilds it first or on the same day. At Smile Dental, a graft costs ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 by type and is listed in your written plan before you book.
