A dental implant is meant to stay in your jaw for good. In a 2019 review of 18 long-term studies, about 96 of every 100 implants were still in place after 10 years. The crown on top is a different matter. It wears like any tooth surface and may need replacing after 10 to 15 years.

This post is about how long an implant lasts once it is in. If you want to know how long treatment takes from start to finish, read how long dental implants take.

The short answer

The implant post is designed to be permanent, while the crown is the part that may be redone one day.

The best long-term data we have is clear. Howe and colleagues pooled 18 studies that followed modern implants for 10 years. The implant survival figure was 96.4% (Howe et al., Journal of Dentistry, 2019). A 2024 review looked even further, at 20 years. The authors summed it up as about 4 in 5 implants still doing well, and said checkups should continue for life (20-year meta-analysis, Clinical Oral Investigations, 2024).

So the honest answer is decades for most people. Daily cleaning and regular checkups do a lot of the work.

Why an implant can last so long

An implant lasts because your jawbone grows onto it and holds it like a natural root.

The implant itself is a small titanium post. It is placed in the jaw where the tooth root used to be. Over the next few months, bone cells grow right up against its rough surface. Dentists call this osseointegration. In plain words, the bone and the implant join.

After that, the implant itself cannot decay. What it needs is healthy bone and healthy gum around it, which is where daily care comes in.

What lasts how long: implant, connector and crown

An implant tooth has three parts, and each one has its own lifespan.

Cleveland Clinic notes that most crowns and bridges last around 15 years, while the implant can last much longer with good care (Cleveland Clinic, dental implants).

We use screw-retained crowns on implants. That means the crown is held by a tiny screw, not cement. If it ever chips or wears, the doctor can take it off and make a new one. The implant underneath stays exactly where it is.

What keeps an implant healthy for decades

Most of what makes an implant last is simple daily care plus a checkup every six months.

  • Brush twice a day. Use a soft brush and give the gum line around the implant the same attention as your other teeth.
  • Clean between teeth. Floss, an interdental brush or a water flosser all work.
  • Keep your checkups. The doctor checks the gum, the bite and the crown.
  • Stop smoking if you can. Smokers have more implant problems than non-smokers, both while healing and later on (Dutta et al., 2020).
  • Wear a night guard if you grind. Grinding puts heavy force on the crown. A guard worn at night takes that force instead.
  • Keep sugar levels steady if you have diabetes. Well-controlled diabetes heals and holds an implant well. Our guide to implants with diabetes and blood pressure explains more.

The most common long-term issue is the gum around the implant. A 2022 review found that a history of gum disease, smoking and poor cleaning all raise the chance of it (BMC Oral Health, 2022). The good news is that each of these is something you can work on.

Early problems and late problems: what each one means

A problem in the first weeks is usually about healing, while one years later is usually about the gum.

In the first weeks or months. The bone has not fully joined the implant yet. If an implant feels loose at this stage, it usually means the bone did not take hold this time. It is checked in a short visit. Often the spot heals and the implant is placed again later.

Years later. The bone joined well, and the implant worked for a long time. A late problem usually starts with plaque on the gum around it. The gum gets red or bleeds, and if it is left alone, bone can be lost. Caught early, it is treated with a careful cleaning and better home care.

Get your implant checked if you notice any of these:

  • The implant tooth feels loose or moves.
  • It hurts when you bite.
  • The gum around it is red, swollen or bleeds when you brush.
  • The crown has chipped or feels different in your bite.

Most of these turn out to be small and easy to fix. A loose crown is often just a screw that needs tightening.

If an implant does need redoing

A failed implant can often be replaced, sometimes after the bone is rebuilt first.

The doctor removes the implant gently and lets the area heal. A 3D scan then shows how much bone is there. If the bone is thin, a graft adds bone so a new implant can sit fully in it. Our post on not having enough bone for an implant explains how this works.

A new implant is not the only route. A bridge or a denture can also replace the tooth. If several teeth are involved, All-on-4 implants may suit better.

How we plan an implant to last

An implant lasts longest when the plan around it is right, and the brand is only one part of that.

Implants at our clinics are planned by Dr. Rajesh Kumar Y, MDS Orthodontics, Facial Orthopedist and Fellow of Implantology (Germany). Every plan starts with a 3D scan to measure the bone. If the bone is short, a graft is planned before or with the implant. The crown is made to fit your bite, so no single tooth takes too much force. If you grind, a night guard is part of the plan.

We offer several implant systems, from ADIN, Bioline and ARKA up to Nobel Biocare. The written plan names the one we suggest for your bone and bite. Our post on whether cheap dental implants are a mistake explains why the plan matters more than the label.

After placement, regular reviews and cleanings happen at either branch. At Kondapur, Dr. Varsha Reddy, Dental Surgeon, sees many patients for these routine visits. Read more about dental implants in Kondapur and Vizag.

What happens at your ₹500 consultation

For ₹500 you get an iTero 3D scan and a written plan with the exact total before anything starts.

The scan takes a few minutes, with no moulds. The doctor shows you the bone and the gap on the screen and explains what an implant would involve. If an X-ray is needed, it costs ₹200 to ₹500.

Your written plan names the implant system, the crown material and whether a graft is needed. Each item carries its price. You take it home and decide in your own time. Book your visit on WhatsApp whenever you are ready.
