Root Canals: Why the Thing You're Scared Of Already Happened
The pain you fear from a root canal already happened. Here is what the treatment really does, and the one step that decides how long your tooth lasts.
Losing a tooth changes more than your bite. Within 6 months of extraction, jawbone in the empty socket begins to shrink. Neighbouring teeth tilt into the gap. The opposing tooth starts drifting downward without anything to bite against. Over years, this cascade can reshape your entire bite and face.
Dental implants stop and reverse this process. A titanium post placed into the jawbone replaces the tooth root, preserving bone. A custom crown on top restores function. Unlike bridges, implants don't require cutting down healthy neighbouring teeth. Unlike dentures, they don't move, click, or need removal.
At Smile Dental Visakhapatnam, Dr. Y. Rajesh Kumar leads implant cases. With an MDS in Orthodontics, Fellowship in Implantology from Germany, and close to three decades of clinical practice since 1997, he's placed implants across generations of the same families — which means we can tell you what actually holds up over 15-20 years, not just what works for a year.
The full journey from first consultation to final crown spans 4-6 months. Here's what happens at each stage:
Visit 1 — Diagnostics (₹500 consultation + ₹200 IOPA or ₹500 OPG): Clinical examination, X-rays, and if needed, 3D cone-beam scan. We look at bone volume, bone density, proximity to nerves and sinuses, and your overall oral health. Patients leave with a written treatment plan and exact cost.
Visit 2 — Implant placement (60-90 minutes under local anaesthesia): The gum is opened, a precision hole drilled into the jawbone, and the titanium implant placed. Sutures go in, and you leave with post-op instructions. Most patients manage with paracetamol for 2-3 days.
Healing phase (3-6 months): The bone grows around and into the implant surface — a biological process called osseointegration. You go about normal life. For front teeth, we often place a temporary replacement so aesthetics aren't affected.
Visit 3 — Abutment and scan: Once the implant has fused with bone, we attach the connector (abutment) and take a digital intraoral scan for your permanent crown.
Visit 4 — Crown fitting: Your custom crown is fitted, bite adjusted, and polished. You leave with a functional tooth you can bite, chew, and floss around normally.
Pricing is identical across both Smile Dental locations. The total is implant cost + crown cost:
Implant (titanium post):
Screw-retained crown on implant:
Total per implant + crown: ₹45,000 (entry: ADIN + MLS) to ₹88,000 (premium: Nobel Active + Zirconia). Most patients choose mid-tier combinations at ₹55,000-₹70,000.
Additional procedures — bone grafts, sinus lifts, ridge augmentation — are quoted separately based on what the scan shows. They're disclosed during consultation, not after treatment starts.
This is the most common question we hear, so here's the honest framework Dr. Rajesh uses:
Budget-conscious, posterior (back) teeth: ADIN or Neodent performs very well. These are reputable systems with solid track records in the ₹35,000-₹40,000 range.
Front tooth, aesthetic priority: Bredent or Nobel Biocare. Premium systems with better abutment options for aesthetic outcomes, and decades of published clinical data.
Compromised bone or complex case: Nobel Biocare Active. The tapered design and surface treatment give better primary stability in soft or insufficient bone.
Immediate loading (same-day implant): Requires both good primary stability and an ideal site. Dr. Rajesh assesses this during consultation — not all patients are candidates, and honest advice matters more than selling the convenience.
Active chair time across all visits is about 3-4 hours total. The calendar timeline is 4-6 months, most of which is bone healing. For full-arch cases, planning can extend to 6-8 months. Patients with excellent bone and a single tooth sometimes qualify for immediate loading, which compresses the timeline to 8-10 weeks.
Three patterns come up in patient feedback. First, Dr. Rajesh's 29-year practice track record — many of our second-generation patients had their parents treated here. Second, we work across six implant systems, so the recommendation is based on your case, not on what the clinic stocks. Third, all-in pricing is disclosed before treatment begins; patients tell us this is the reason they come to us after being quoted elsewhere.
