Root Canals: Why the Thing You're Scared Of Already Happened
The pain you fear from a root canal already happened. Here is what the treatment really does, and the one step that decides how long your tooth lasts.
Not every toothache is an emergency. These are:
What's not usually an emergency: a tooth that's been mildly sensitive for weeks, a cosmetic chip with no pain, a wisdom tooth causing occasional soreness. These need attention but can wait for a scheduled appointment.
Different emergencies need different immediate action. Here's what to do before you get to the clinic:
Knocked-out tooth: You have roughly 30-60 minutes to save it. Do not scrub the tooth. Hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, keep the tooth in a cup of milk (not water) and come to the clinic immediately. Time is everything.
Severe pain: Rinse with warm salt water. Take paracetamol or ibuprofen (avoid aspirin — it can increase bleeding). Do not place the painkiller directly on the tooth or gum. Cold compress on the outside of the cheek reduces swelling.
Broken tooth: Save any pieces. Rinse the mouth with warm water. Cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax if you have it. Avoid chewing on that side.
Abscess / swelling: Do not heat the area (no hot compress). Rinse gently with salt water. Get to the clinic — an abscess is an active infection that can spread to other parts of your body if ignored.
Uncontrolled bleeding: Bite down firmly on clean gauze or a teabag for 20 minutes. Don't rinse forcefully. If bleeding continues, come to the clinic or nearest emergency facility.
Call us the moment you realise you have a dental emergency. We create same-day slots specifically for emergencies — even when the schedule looks full. Dr. Rajesh has been handling emergency cases in Vizag since 1997, and the clinic keeps emergency-protocol materials on hand at all times.
Typical emergency visit flow:
Phone triage: When you call, we assess severity and advise on immediate steps while you travel to the clinic.
Examination & X-ray: On arrival, we immediately examine, take a digital IOPA or OPG, and diagnose. This takes 10-15 minutes.
Pain relief first, definitive treatment second: Our priority in emergencies is getting you out of pain. That may mean a temporary filling, draining an abscess, antibiotics, or a pulpotomy. Definitive treatment (RCT, crown, implant) is scheduled for a follow-up visit once the pain is controlled.
Clear cost conversation: Emergency fees aren't hidden. The consultation and X-ray are standard pricing. Any procedure done that day is quoted before we start.
Emergency care uses our standard pricing — there's no emergency surcharge:

Digital IOPA X-ray: ₹200
Digital OPG: ₹500
Simple extraction (front tooth): ₹1,500
Simple extraction (back tooth): ₹2,500

A dental clinic handles most dental emergencies, but go to a hospital emergency department if:
These are medical emergencies, not dental emergencies. We'll coordinate follow-up dental care once the medical emergency is stabilised.
Roughly 70% of dental emergencies we see could have been prevented. Regular 6-monthly checkups catch cavities and cracks before they become crises. Scaling twice a year prevents the gum infections that turn into abscesses. Night guards for grinders prevent the cracked teeth we see in stressed IT professionals.
Not every emergency is preventable — trauma, accidents, and biological surprises happen. But regular dental care dramatically reduces the odds of an emergency at 2 AM.
Dr. Rajesh's nearly three decades in practice means emergency judgment developed over tens of thousands of cases. We prioritise getting you out of pain first, not selling you a treatment plan while you're still suffering. Emergency-ready inventory, clear phone triage, and same-day slots are standard.
