Root Canals: Why the Thing You're Scared Of Already Happened
The pain you fear from a root canal already happened. Here is what the treatment really does, and the one step that decides how long your tooth lasts.
When you lose several teeth or all of them, you have three main options: do nothing, get dentures, or get dental implants. "Doing nothing" is rarely a real option — missing teeth lead to bone loss, shifting of remaining teeth, changes in bite, difficulty eating, and significant changes in facial structure over time.
Between dentures and implants, the question isn't "which is better?" — both are valid solutions for different situations. The right answer depends on how many teeth you're missing, the health of your jawbone, your budget, your age, and what you want your mouth to feel like for the next 20 years.
At Smile Dental Visakhapatnam, Dr. Y. Rajesh Kumar (MDS, 29 years) guides patients through this decision regularly. This guide covers the honest trade-offs so you can have an informed conversation when you come in.
What they are: Removable prosthetic teeth set in a gum-coloured acrylic base that sits directly on your gums (and, for upper dentures, covers the roof of your mouth). Held in place by suction, the shape of your gums, and — for partial dentures — clasps around remaining teeth.
Types available at our Vizag clinic:
Strengths: Much cheaper than implants upfront. No surgery involved. Can be made in 1-2 weeks. Restore basic function and aesthetics quickly. Good fallback if implants aren't possible due to health or bone issues.
Realities: They move when you eat certain foods (corn on the cob, apples, sticky foods become tricky). You feel less sensation — denture wearers often describe food as less "present" in the mouth. They need to come out daily for cleaning. They can cause sore spots, especially in the first few weeks. Upper dentures cover the palate, which blunts taste. Over 5-10 years, the underlying jawbone shrinks (because there's no tooth root stimulating it), and the denture needs relining or replacing.
What they are: Titanium posts surgically placed into the jawbone that fuse with the bone over 3-6 months, then topped with a permanent crown. For full-arch replacement, 4-6 implants can support a fixed bridge spanning all teeth (All-on-4 or All-on-6 systems).
Types at our Vizag clinic:
Strengths: They feel and function like natural teeth — you chew apples and corn normally. No movement, no relining, no daily removal. They prevent jawbone shrinkage because the implant stimulates the bone like a natural root. With good care, they last 20+ years (often for life). Taste and sensation are fully preserved. No clasps visible.
Realities: Much higher upfront cost. Surgery is involved, and healing takes 3-6 months before the final crown. You need enough healthy jawbone (grafting possible if not). Not suitable for uncontrolled diabetics, heavy smokers, or patients on certain bone medications. Requires meticulous oral hygiene — implants can fail from gum disease (peri-implantitis).

Three questions answer 90% of cases:
Question 1 — What's your budget horizon? If you need a solution now and ₹50,000 is your ceiling for full mouth, dentures are the realistic path. If you're weighing total cost over 20 years, implants often work out comparable because dentures need replacement every 5-10 years plus relining every few years.
Question 2 — How healthy is your jawbone? Years without teeth = bone loss. On a CBCT scan, Dr. Rajesh can measure exactly how much bone you have. Sufficient bone = implants are straightforward. Insufficient bone = implants may need grafting (extra ₹25,000-₹75,000 per area) or may not be suitable at all — in which case dentures or implant-retained overdentures become the practical choice.
Question 3 — What matters most to you — upfront cost or daily experience? If you're OK removing a denture every night, dealing with some food restrictions, and accepting gradual bone loss over time — dentures are fine. If you want to eat anything, forget you have a prosthesis, and preserve jaw structure — implants justify the cost.
For patients who want more stability than dentures but can't afford full implant bridges, this is often the sweet spot. Two to four implants are placed, and the denture snaps securely onto them. The denture is still removable for cleaning but doesn't move when you eat. Cost: ₹1,20,000-₹1,80,000 for full upper or lower. Worth discussing — many patients are unaware this option exists.
Dr. Rajesh has been placing implants and fitting dentures at this Vizag clinic since the late 1990s. Long experience matters here because the "right" choice genuinely varies by case, and someone who has watched hundreds of patients live with each option over 10-20 years has a practical perspective that's hard to get elsewhere.
We also quote complete treatment costs up front — not "₹35,000 for implant" only to add ₹18,000 for the crown later. The ranges in this guide are real.
