Root Canals: Why the Thing You're Scared Of Already Happened
The pain you fear from a root canal already happened. Here is what the treatment really does, and the one step that decides how long your tooth lasts.
Teeth whitening works on extrinsic stains — coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, curry, and general dietary discolouration built up on the tooth surface. It can also lighten intrinsic stains (deeper discolouration within the tooth structure) by several shades, though less dramatically.
What it doesn't fix: stains from fillings, crowns, or veneers (these don't respond to whitening and stay their original colour). Stains from tetracycline antibiotics taken in childhood need a different approach — usually veneers or bonding. Genetically yellow teeth lighten but rarely go to bright white. Fluorosis spots often improve but may need micro-abrasion or bonding for full correction.
Setting realistic expectations matters. Most patients improve 4-8 shades with professional whitening. If you're starting from stained teeth, that's a dramatic visible change. If you're starting from naturally pale yellow, the change is subtler but still noticeable.
All three available at both Kondapur and Vizag locations. Pricing is identical.
Option 1 — Take-home whitening trays (₹5,000): Custom-made trays with professional-grade gel you use at home. Wear 30-60 minutes daily for 10-14 days. Results develop gradually. Best for patients who want gentle progress, or who travel frequently.
Option 2 — In-office chemical bleaching with POLA (₹8,000-₹10,000): Single 60-90 minute appointment. Professional gel activated by the clinician. Immediate 4-6 shade improvement. Good for patients who want visible results fast but without the light-based system.
Option 3 — ZOOM Advanced Whitening (₹15,000): The premium option. Single 90-minute appointment. Professional gel activated by the ZOOM LED lamp. Typically 6-8 shade improvement in one session. Most dramatic single-visit result. Preferred for weddings, events, before-and-after photoshoots.
Optional add-on: Potassium nitrate trays (extra charges) for patients with sensitive teeth. These desensitise enamel before whitening, reducing the temporary sensitivity that whitening can cause.
Consultation (₹500): Dr. Varsha (Kondapur) or Dr. Rajesh (Vizag) examines your teeth, identifies the type of staining, and recommends which whitening method is suited. If there are cavities, they need to be filled first — whitening gel on an exposed cavity causes severe pain.
Pre-whitening cleaning: Professional cleaning removes surface plaque and tartar first (₹2,000). Whitening on unclean teeth gives patchy results.
The procedure: Trays, chemical bleaching, or ZOOM — depending on your chosen option.
Aftercare guidance: For 48 hours post-procedure, avoid dark foods (coffee, tea, wine, turmeric-heavy food, tobacco). This is when enamel is most porous and prone to re-staining.
6 months to 2 years depending on habits. Heavy coffee/tea drinkers, smokers, and curry-heavy diets lose brightness faster. Occasional touch-ups (take-home trays) maintain results year-round.
Realistic maintenance: one full whitening session every 12-18 months, plus take-home touch-up trays at home 2-3 times a year. Total annual cost: ₹5,000-₹8,000 to keep bright results continuously.
Professional whitening done correctly does not damage enamel. The active ingredient (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) lightens stain molecules without weakening tooth structure, when used at professional concentrations and under dental supervision.
Temporary sensitivity during and for 2-3 days after is common — that's the enamel tubules being temporarily exposed. It settles on its own. Potassium nitrate trays reduce this significantly if sensitivity is a concern.
What does damage teeth: over-the-counter products used incorrectly, DIY baking soda/lemon/charcoal fads (charcoal is abrasive and strips enamel), and whitening done on cavities or cracked teeth. None of these happen in a professional setting.
Whitening is the lowest-cost, least-invasive cosmetic dental treatment. For yellow or stained but otherwise healthy teeth, it's almost always the first thing to try. If after whitening the teeth are still misshapen, chipped, or uneven, then bonding (₹3,500 per tooth) or veneers (higher cost) are the next step.
Rough comparison: whitening improves shade. Bonding improves shape and small chips. Veneers change both — they're essentially cosmetic covers for the front of teeth. For most patients bothered by colour alone, whitening solves the issue for a fraction of veneer cost.
Three practical reasons. First, we assess whether whitening will actually work for your specific staining before taking payment — some stains don't respond well, and we'd rather tell you upfront than leave you disappointed. Second, both clinics offer all three options, so we recommend based on your goal rather than what we happen to stock. Third, Dr. Varsha and Dr. Rajesh both do whitening chair-side personally, so you're not handed off to an assistant.
