Gum Disease Prevention: Why Your Gums Matter More Than Your Teeth
Gum disease is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss in India. Scaling costs ₹2,000–4,000. Here’s what healthy gums look like, what damages them, and when you need professional treatment.
Dental veneers are thin custom shells bonded to the front surface of teeth to change their appearance. They fix five things well: heavy staining that whitening can't reach (tetracycline, fluorosis, trauma), chipped or cracked front teeth, small gaps between front teeth, minor misalignment of front teeth where full orthodontics isn't wanted, and teeth that are too small or oddly shaped.
What veneers don't fix: structurally weak teeth (need crowns, not veneers), heavy bite problems (need orthodontics), severely misaligned teeth (braces or aligners are the right tool), or back teeth (crowns are typically used for molar restoration).
At Smile Dental Kondapur, most veneer patients fall into three groups: people preparing for weddings or major events, working professionals who've noticed increasingly visible staining or old bonding that's chipped, and patients who want to fix a single discoloured or oddly shaped front tooth without touching the others.
Composite veneers (direct bonding) — ₹3,500 per tooth: Tooth-coloured light-cure composite resin is sculpted directly onto the tooth in a single visit. Dr. Varsha builds up the shape by hand, cures it under UV light, and polishes to a natural finish. Good for 1-2 teeth, minor shape changes, and budget-conscious patients. Lifespan 5-7 years before needing refinishing. Less stain-resistant than porcelain.
Porcelain veneers (lab-made) — ₹12,000-₹22,000 per tooth: Thin (0.3-0.5mm) porcelain shells made in a dental lab, bonded to the tooth with resin cement. Requires 2 visits over 2-3 weeks. The gold standard for durability (10-15+ years), stain resistance, and natural appearance. The porcelain reflects light like natural enamel — composites can't match this.
Zirconia veneers — ₹15,000-₹25,000 per tooth: For heavier wear or patients with a strong bite. More durable than porcelain but slightly less translucent.
Premium ultra-thin porcelain (Lumineers-style) — ₹22,000-₹30,000 per tooth: Requires minimal or no tooth preparation. Best for adding shape or covering discolouration on teeth that are structurally fine. Most conservative option but not suitable for every case.
A full smile makeover typically covers 6-10 upper front teeth (from one back premolar to the other). Some patients also do 6 lower veneers for symmetry. Here's what that looks like:
Add consultations, preparatory cleaning, whitening of lower teeth (if needed to match), and temporary veneer fees where applicable.
Consultation (₹500 + X-rays): Dr. Varsha examines the teeth, discusses what you want to change, takes photos, and — for full smile makeovers — uses digital smile design software to show you a preview of your new smile before you commit. Cost estimates are given at this visit.
Visit 1 — Preparation (60-90 minutes per 4-6 teeth): A very thin layer of enamel (0.3-0.5mm) is removed from the front of the teeth to make room for the veneer without making teeth look bulky. Digital scans or impressions are taken. Temporary veneers are fitted so you leave the clinic with a natural smile throughout the lab time.
Lab work (10-14 days): The dental lab crafts each veneer individually, matching shade, translucency, and shape to the design brief.
Visit 2 — Bonding (60-90 minutes): Temporaries are removed. Each veneer is tried in, checked for fit and shade, then permanently bonded with resin cement and cured under UV light. Bite is checked and polished. You leave with your final smile.
Review — 1 week later: Quick check of fit, bite, and any minor adjustments. At this point, the veneers are fully integrated with your oral routine.
Realistic ranges based on our cases:
What shortens lifespan: chewing ice, biting nails, using teeth as tools (opening packets, cutting thread), and uncorrected teeth grinding. A custom night guard (₹3,500-₹5,000) is a small investment that protects a large one.
The natural look depends hugely on the lab technician's skill and the dentist's attention to detail. Three things we pay particular attention to at Kondapur:
Shade selection: Rather than picking "white", we pick the right shade for your skin tone, age, and the colour of your other teeth. An unnaturally white 8-tooth veneer smile on a 45-year-old with age-matched other teeth looks artificial. We bias slightly warmer and more natural than most "Instagram white" smiles.
Translucency and layering: Natural enamel has a translucent edge and a slightly more opaque body. Good porcelain veneers replicate this. Cheap veneers look flat and chalky.
Shape and symmetry: We study the natural shape of your lips, face, and existing teeth. A veneer smile should match your face — not be a generic template.
Three reasons. First, we don't push veneers when simpler options work — if whitening + composite bonding will fix what you want fixed, we say so, even though the bill is smaller. Second, we preview the final smile using digital design before you commit — so there are no surprises at the end. Third, we work with multiple labs and match the right technician to each case (shade matching a single front tooth requires a specialist; a full smile makeover benefits from a different kind of expertise).
