Your Wedding Photos Will Expose This Expensive Mistake
You'll spend thousands on photography but neglect the centerpiece of every image.
Ask ten people whether their jaw clicks and a few will say yes. Most of them have never done anything about it and never needed to.
The US National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research puts it plainly. Joint sounds without pain are common and do not need treatment. So if your jaw pops when you yawn but nothing hurts, nothing feels stiff, and you can eat what you like, you are in the group that can leave it alone.
That is the honest starting point. We say it up front because plenty of people spend months worrying about a click that was never a problem.
Your jaw joint sits just in front of each ear. It is the only joint in the body that has to slide as well as hinge, which is what lets you open wide and chew from side to side. Between the ball and the socket sits a small disc of cartilage that travels along with the jaw as it moves.
A click is usually that disc moving slightly out of step and then catching up. It makes a sound. In most cases that is the whole story.
Some jaw problems do deserve checking. These are the ones we ask patients to come in for.
None of these point to something alarming. They point to a reason worth finding, and finding it early usually means the answer is a simple one.
Jaw pain gets filed under one label, TMD, short for temporomandibular disorder. Under that label sit a few quite different situations, and they are treated differently.
Muscle pain. By far the most common. The chewing muscles get overworked, often from clenching or grinding during sleep or through a stressful stretch at work. The joint itself is fine. It is the muscles that ache.
Joint pain. The disc inside the joint is not moving smoothly, or the joint surfaces are irritated. This is where clicking, catching, and locking come from.
Bite and jaw position. For some people the way the upper and lower jaws meet keeps loading the joint unevenly. This is less common than the internet suggests. But when it is the reason, treating only the muscles will not hold.
Working out which of these you have is the real job. It is also why a scan on its own does not answer the question.
Dr. Rajesh Kumar Y leads this work at both branches. He is an orthodontist and facial orthopedist, one of a small number of facial orthopedists practising in India, so jaw position and jaw growth are his daily work rather than a sideline.
Where it hurts, when it started, what makes it worse, how you sleep, what your week looks like. Most of the answer is usually sitting in the history.
How far you can open. Whether the opening path runs straight or swings to one side. Where in the movement the sound happens. Which muscles are tender when pressed.
An iTero 3D scan records your bite and teeth with no moulds and no radiation. If we need to see the bone of the joint itself, we explain why before anything is taken.
Written down, with what we recommend, what it costs, and what happens if you decide to wait and watch instead. You take it home. Nothing gets decided in the chair.
Most jaw pain settles with conservative care. Reviews of the published evidence put the share of people who improve without any surgery at somewhere between three quarters and nine in ten. For the great majority, surgery never enters the conversation.
Softer food for a couple of weeks so the muscles get a rest. A warm compress on the sore side. Dropping the habits that keep the joint loaded, like chewing gum all day, biting nails, or resting your chin on your hand at the desk. Short jaw exercises, if we have shown you which ones and how often.
A night guard is the usual next step for people who clench or grind in their sleep. It is a thin custom splint that keeps your teeth from loading each other overnight, and for many people the morning tightness eases within a few weeks. Where one particular muscle is the trouble, targeted physiotherapy helps.
Only once the muscles have calmed down do we look at whether the bite itself needs changing. That might mean aligners or braces to level out how the teeth meet. In children it can mean guiding jaw growth while that growth is still available. This is not a first step and we do not sell it as one.
We will not put you in a night guard because you mentioned a click. We will not rebuild a bite to silence a sound that is not hurting you. If your jaw does not need treatment, we will say so, and you go home with nothing to buy.
That is a good part of why people come to us for a second opinion on jaw pain. Some arrive holding a quote for extensive work and leave with a night guard and one habit to change.
Both branches see jaw problems. Kondapur in Hyderabad, and Maharani Peta in Vizag, near the Collector Office. Consultations run Monday to Saturday, 10 in the morning to 8 at night. A first assessment is a conversation and an examination, not a treatment.
If you are travelling in from abroad, send your history and any earlier scan on WhatsApp before you book flights. Dr. Rajesh reviews it and tells you honestly whether this needs an appointment at all, and if it does, how much of it can be finished in the time you have.
